What To Do If Your Wax Melts Are Too Strong

What To Do If Your Wax Melts Are Too Strong

Wax melts are a wonderful way to fill your home with delightful fragrances, and many people enjoy a strongly scented wax melt which is why we make ours with a 10% fragrance load. But sometimes the scent can be too strong and overpowering and this can lead to unpleasant side effects like headaches or it can even trigger allergies for those who are very sensitive to specific scents or scents in general. Or maybe sometimes you’re just in the mood for a lighter, softer, more subtle fragrance. No matter the reason, we have the best tips for you to help you adjust the intensity of your wax melts so you can get the most out of them and enjoy the very best scent-sational experience.

1. Use a Smaller Portion of Wax

Our wax melts come in a 5 portioned snap bar, allowing you to break off segments. If the fragrance is overpowering, start with half a cube instead of using a full piece. This will help reduce the intensity while still providing a pleasant scent. And if you’re using a warmer that is on the larger side and you’re concerned about the melt pool not being sufficient enough, we highly recommend using a silicone liner which will help keep the melt pool contained in a smaller space and it makes cleaning up a breeze!

2. Melt in a Larger or More Open Space

If your wax melt’s throw is too strong in a small room, try setting your warmer into a larger space with better air circulation. Open areas allow the scent to disperse more evenly, preventing it from becoming overwhelming.

3. Increase Airflow in the Room

If the above isn’t possible, then consider introducing more airflow into the room. A great idea would be to crack open a window, run an extractor, turn on a ceiling fan, or use an air purifier to help disperse the scent more quickly. Increased airflow can prevent the fragrance from becoming too concentrated in one area while still allowing you to be able to enjoy the scent throughout your space.

4. Lower the Heat Output of Your Warmer

The type of wax warmer you use can significantly affect the scent throw. Some warmers have adjustable heat settings so you can try using the lowest one. High-wattage warmers (such as 25W bulb warmers) heat the wax more intensely, releasing more fragrance at once. Switching to a lower-wattage warmer (such as 15W) or a tea light warmer with a lower heat output can help slow down the release of fragrance, making it less intense. If you have a hot plate warmer you can try stacking a couple silicone liners to help absorb more of the heat and slow down that heat dispersion which will give you a less intense output.

5. Dilute with Unscented Wax

Melting  your strongly scented wax melt with a bit of unscented wax can help tone down the fragrance. We recommend using a plain, unscented soy wax in addition to your scented wax melt. If you don’t have any on hand you can use a portion of one of the melts until the fragrance is used up and then keep the leftover wax to use as your base wax to dilute any new scents (just be sure all the fragrance is used up).

6. Limit the Melting Time

Instead of leaving your wax warmer on for hours, try shorter melting sessions. Run your warmer for 20-30 minutes, then turn it off and let the residual heat continue diffusing the fragrance. This method prevents the scent from becoming too overwhelming for too long a period while still allowing you to enjoy it.

7. Consider Blending with a Milder Scented Wax Melt

If you have other wax melts that are softer or more neutral in scent and still complementary, you can blend them to balance out the strength of a potent melt. For example, mixing a strong spice scent with a light vanilla, a soft citrus or fresh cotton scent can create a more balanced fragrance profile.

Final Thoughts

Finding the perfect fragrance intensity for your space is all about trial and error. By adjusting your wax melt usage, choosing the right warmer, and managing airflow, you can create a perfectly balanced scent experience that suits your preferences. Whether you prefer a subtle background aroma or a strong fragrance burst, these simple adjustments will help you get the most out of your wax melts and can even extend the life of your snap bar giving you more bang for your buck!
