He found the wormwood deep within the forest, growing in a perfect circle where the trees gave way to open ground. Nothing else grew around it. The soil was bare, the surrounding grass untouched, as though even the roots beneath the earth knew better than to cross its boundary.

He knelt and began cutting the bitter stems, careful not to let the sap touch his skin. As he worked, he became aware of something moving among the trees behind him. At first he thought it was the wind, but the sound grew steadily closer, branches shifting, leaves whispering, something making its way through the undergrowth.
He paused as it came to the very edge of the clearing and then stopped. Whatever it was, it would come no farther.

He gathered the last of the wormwood and rose slowly, keeping an eye on the trees. For a moment, he thought he saw a pale shape between the trunks, then it vanished. Looking down at the handful of bitter stems in his palm, he reflected that the old book had called wormwood a bitter herb to ward but it had neglected to mention what it kept out.
